I enjoyed this book. It was a fast read for a lazy afternoon of light mystery entertainment. It has elements of real life and elements of convenient coincidences, much like a Jessica Fletcher episode. There’s Kelly, a 50-something, long-time widow, who owns a coffee shop in her small, Oregon hometown. There’s her new husband Mike, a 50-something, county Sheriff. They’ve both experienced heartache and have found joy with each other. Meanwhile, in their small town where people still leave their doors unlocked, there’s very little crime. Although, it seems a lot of people are armed in that town.In this case, Kelly travels from her coastal town to Portland to help a friend. While there, a friend of the friend is murdered. Kelly has developed a reputation for her investigative skills and the friend asks her to stay in Portland a while longer to privately investigate what happened. Most of the action takes place in and around a popular, fancy restaurant that was owned by the deceased. Kelly identifies a few suspects and eventually one of them makes a move that leads to capture.I liked the characters in the story and the restaurant setting. It wasn’t a hugely complicated story, but it also wasn’t easy to figure out exactly who did it along with enough evidence to convict. Meanwhile, with daily phone calls home to her Sheriff, he is both exasperated by her frequent proximity to crime and becoming more accepting of her ability to contribute to solving it.They seem like an okay couple. She doesn’t seem ditzy, but she seems semi-subservient to him and has a tendency to assert herself by fibbing to people, i.e, “mentally crossing her fingers.” Her husband has caught on to her tendency to “fib” to him. It’s part of the schtick of the story and their relationship. Their relationship has a sort of Lucy-Desi 1950’s feel to it, but in fact the story takes place in the age of texting.I like how the evidence, suspects, and story evolved. There’s no graphic sex, violence, or language in the story.
